Back by popular demand, award-winning photojournalist Spencer Platt will guide students through the art and practice of street photography in this hands-on workshop. In reviewing local news and global issues, participants will learn how to look at stories for marketability and to shoot in an intimate way while maintaining a sense of objectivity. The workshop will also cover equipment, deadlines, the importance of strong captions, and social media.

This is a BYOC (bring-your-own-camera) workshop that will meet for an intro and slideshow session in the Photoville Workshop Area before heading out for a live, guided shooting session in and around Photoville. The workshop also includes an optional wrap-up session and casual group critique, where students can share work and ideas, and get feedback from instructors and workshop peers.

Spencer_PlattSpencer Platt is a staff photographer with Getty Images, who has covered breaking news and conflicts in the Congo, Afghanistan, Liberia and Iraq. He recently covered the Democratic and Republican National Conventions, and has traveled across the country capturing street scenes and protests, seeking images that can visually convey the beauty of uncertainty.

Jeanette D. Moses is a visual journalist based in New York City who specializes in live music and portraiture. Her music photography has been published by SPIN, Paste, Brooklyn Vegan, Flavorwire, PopGun and Impose and her work has been exhibited in group and solo shows at Cloud City, Vital Joint, IDIO Gallery and The Cobra Club. In 2017 she founded Blood Sweat and Beers, a photography site dedicated to documenting New York City’s vibrant D.I.Y. music scene. This same year she was also recognized by PDN’s Ultimate Music Moment for her portrait series featuring Atlanta’s The Coathangers. Her favorite place to be on any given night is standing way too close to the speakers with camera in hand at venues across the city.
