“El dorado” is a historical reference to the myths and legends invented by the conquerors when they arrived in America. These stories, wrapped in madness about the richness of the land, became the basis of social structures, involving the domestication of the territory not only in America, but around the world.

In this project, gold is a metaphor for wealth and lust. However it also allows us to discuss the extinctions of species, tribes and ecosystems that disappear because of our madness for wealth and our desire to rule over everything. The new gold is asymbol of the disappearance of what I consider our true riches.

There is a word that describes this concern: “Solstalgia,” a neologism that refers to a feeling or form of anguish, sadness and psychic or existential impotence caused when we see or experience the consequences of the global ecological crisis.


Andres Millan was born in Bogotá, Colombia. His photographic work is related to sociocultural problems of identity, memory, periphery and environment, as well as the relationship between man and his environment.

Andres has participated in national exhibitions in Bogota, Cali and Medellin and In international exhibitions such as “The Image of the Savage” in Rome, organized by LoosenArt; Getxophoto in Getxo, Spain; “The Exposure Award” in the Louvre Museum in France; and the “Coordenadas” project in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His work has been published in various media outlets, including The New York Times and in the US, EXIT magazine and Radio 5 in Spain, as well as Vice, Semana, Arteria, Arcadia, Exclama, Enfoque Visual, Fotomeraki and Shock in Colombia.

This year, Andres was invited to attend the fifth annual New York Portfolio Review organized by The New York Times. His work has been recognized by the ONCE Photo prize in Spain, and the Memories of the Future prize and the Showcase of Art prize in Colombia. He has been nominated for the Democratic Culture: Artistic and Cultural Agents prize and the Franco-German Antonio Narino Human Rights Prize.
