Over five months, the New York Times set out to chronicle the service workers who kept New York going during the COVID-19 pandemic. At an estimated 2.5 million jobs, the city’s service economy is central to the lives of many New Yorkers who want to order in, get a haircut, or have their groceries delivered. The portraits shown here—unadorned but not inexpressive—reflect hope and dignity in a way that connects us to our fellow New Yorkers.
