Join us for a screening and discussion of the award-winning film Earthrise.

Earthrise tells the story of the first image captured of the Earth from space in 1968. Told solely by the Apollo 8 astronauts, the film recounts their experiences and memories and explores the beauty, awe, and grandeur of the Earth against the blackness of space. This iconic image had a powerful impact on the astronauts and the world, offering a perspective that transcended national, political, and religious boundaries. Told 50 years later, Earthrise compels us to remember this shift and to reflect on the Earth as a shared home. The film features Apollo 8 astronauts Bill Anders, Frank Borman, and Jim Lovell.

The documentary had its world premiere at Tribeca Film Festival and won the Audience Award for Best Short at AFI Docs – it will premiere on POV’s newest documentary strand, POV Shorts, and is produced in partnership with New York Times Op-Docs and This American Life. Watch the PBS broadcast on WNET/Thirteen on November 19th.

The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion.

In honor of “Education Day” at Photoville, the Intrepid Air and Space Museum will provide a portable planetarium. Participants are given an opportunity to experience the journey of astronauts as they navigate the stars.
