Ron Haviv

Ron Haviv is an Emmy nominated and award-winning photojournalist, film director, and co-founder of the photo agency VII, dedicated to documenting conflict and raising about human rights issues around the globe.

Haviv has produced an unflinching record of the injustices of war and his photography has had singular impact. His work in the Balkans, which spanned over a decade of conflict, was used as evidence to indict and convict war criminals at the international tribunal in The Hague. President George H.W. Bush cited Haviv’s chilling photographs documenting paramilitary violence in Panama as one of the reasons for the 1989 American intervention.

His first photography book, “Blood and Honey: A Balkan War Journal”, was called “One of the best nonfiction books of the year,” by The Los Angeles Times and “A chilling but vastly important record of a people’s suffering,” by Newsweek. His other monographs are “Afghanistan: The Road to Kabul”, “Haiti: 12 January 2010” and “The Lost Rolls” described by The Washington Post as “ The magical photos recovered from over 200 lost rolls of film… An odd family photo album in which the kin are the people and places that have defined global politics and culture in the past quarter century.” As a result Haviv created the national public archive, “Lost Rolls America”, preserving memories and images from previously undeveloped rolls of exposed film from the American public.

Haviv co-created and managed multi-platform projects for Doctors Without Borders’ “DR Congo: The Forgotten War” and “Starved for Attention”, UNICEF’s “Child Alert for Darfur and Sri Lanka” and the International Committee of the Red Cross’s “World at War”.

Haviv is the central character in six documentary films, including National Geographic Explorer’s Freelance in a World of Risk. He has provided expert analysis and commentary on ABC News, BBC, CNN, NPR, MSNBC, NBC News, GMA and The Charlie Rose Show and written Op-Eds for The New York Times and The Washington Post.

Haviv is the co-founder and director of The VII Foundation. He is currently co-directing two documentary films, Biography of a Photo and Picasso of Harlem.

Suzie Katz

Suzie Katz is a photographer, speaker, educator and is giving back to the world that has given her so much by creating and running an educational non-profit organization called PhotoWings. Our mission is to highlight and help facilitate the power of photography to influence the world. We help photography to be better understood, created, utilized, seen, and saved.

Through PhotoWings she concentrates on bringing the photos, knowledge and skills around photography to the world both inside and outside the photo silo across generations, cultures, and disciplines. We recognize this wisdom honed by the world’s best visual storytellers and those who use photography are also important to others’ work and life. These ideas can be utilized for self-discovery, better communication, critical thinking, visual literacy, resilience, storytelling and understanding context among others that are also valued in social emotional learning and executive function skills. To document and more richly utilize that legacy we’ve created, along with our innovative partners,100’s of hours of interviews, presentations, and other educational content incorporating these ideas for replication, adaptation, or inspiration.

Suzie also thinks a lot about addressing the often-under-appreciated value of photographs. To do that, however, involves saving images from being lost to the world. Pictures that may not seem important today can be deeply important later to loved ones, for multiple uses in education, and valued as history. So many photos are tossed, lost to technology in what is sometimes referred to as the “digital dark ages”, or destroyed by the elements that they’re no longer available, so an important aspect of our work is to proactively address this timely issue. As photo curator Malcolm Daniel states “Each time we lose a photograph that has power, we’ve lost the opportunity to be changed by it”.

Our mission is to highlight and help facilitate the power of photography to influence the world. We help photography to be better understood, created, utilized, seen, and saved. We are dedicated to utilizing the power of photography to further deep thinking, communication, and action.

The PhotoWings Outreach Program and our extensive media archive have myriad educational applications and possibilities, including projects from partners that cross disciplines, generations, and cultures. We also create toolkits/curricula for replication, adaptation and/or inspiration.

VII Community

VII Community provides ongoing education and support to a network of VII Academy alumni and Foundry Photojournalism Workshop participants numbering more than 1,000 professionals. VII Community members are connected to the profession through online discussions, presentations, reviews, in-person global meet-ups, and a Discord platform for regular exchanges. VII Community is a program of The VII Foundation in partnership with PhotoWings.
