A panel discussion with photographers who covered Superstorm Sandy during the storm, it’s aftermath and the ongoing recovery. Participants include Susannah Ray, Benjamin Lowy, Wyatt Gallery, Douglas Ljungkvist, and Kisha Bari. Moderated by Sean Corcoran, Curator of Prints and Photographs at the Museum of the City of New York. The discussion will cover the photographers various approaches to the subject and their personal relationship to the subject. Additionally, panelists will discuss the large role of photography in the media’s coverage of the storm and it’s after effects.
Wyatt Gallery, a person not a place, received his BFA from NYU Tisch School of The Arts. He’s a recipient of the Fulbright Fellowship, PDN 30 & Rising Stars, 25 Under 25 Up-and-Coming American Photographers and his photographs are in major collections such as the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the George Eastman House, and were featured in Moving Walls 19 at George Soros’ Open Society. His work has been featured in Esquire, Mother Jones, The New York Times, amongst others. His books raise awareness and donate 100% royalties to communities affected by natural disasters. Douglas Ljungkvist is a Brooklyn based fine art photographer originally from Sweden. His personal work explores vernacular beauty that is graphic, colorful, and quiet.
Mood and atmosphere are important aspects to the work that often have subtexts of time and identity. Formally, he is interested in the study of color, form, and space.
Douglas has received several prestigious awards including Winner PDN Photo Annual, Winner New York Photo Festival Invitational, Gold Px3 Best Fine Art Book proposal, National Geographic “Great Outdoors”, and numerous finalists and honorable mentions including CENTER, American Photo, International Photography Awards, Conde Nast Traveler, Photography Masters Cup, Renaissance Photography Prize, Lucie Foundation Scholarship, Design Trust for Urban Space.
His work has been exhibited both in the US and Europe including the foto/pods produced by United Photo Industries at Dumbo Arts Festival, Hereford Arts Festival, New York Photo Festival, Format 11, Bridge Art Fair, Garrison Art Center, Center for Fine Art Photography, London Street Photography Festival, and more.
Kisha Bari is an award-winning photographer from Australia who is passionate about capturing people through portraiture and visual storytelling with a focus on humanitarian issues. She has worked with a range of subjects from America’s union workers to Native American leaders, and from world-renowned ballet dancers to rockstars.
Kisha has been featured in three solo exhibitions at Photoville, New York City’s biggest photo festival; her portrait documentary How Sandy Hit Rockaway (2013), and ReSisters : Behind the Scenes of the Women’s March (2017) and this year’s ‘The Meaning of Now : Living Life with Cancer’. Her work has been published by numerous media outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone and Cosmopolitan Magazine.
Kisha most recently photographed the I Am A Child campaign with Creative Director & activist Paola Mendoza, which can be seen at the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee through December 2018.
