Despite traveling widely, it is in his own backyard that photographer Darrin Zammit Lupi has done what he believes is his most important work, documenting the plight and tragedy of the boat people trying to reach European shores from Africa.
“I try to document the migration story in a way that works from an aesthetic and artistic point of view — not to make pretty pictures, but to make them more emotionally compelling and eye catching, whilst always sticking religiously to the truth and authenticity of the situation before me.”
“Does that mean I have to be totally objective and impartial, or neutral in the face of what is a very controversial and divisive issue throughout the Western world? Dante, in his ‘Inferno,’ wrote, ‘The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis’.”
“We cannot forget that these migrants are fellow citizens in an unequal world.”
