Mikayla Raines was an extraordinary achiever, dedicated to rescuing foxes bred for coats on fur farms. Mikayla founded Save A Fox Rescue, a nonprofit taking in “reject foxes” judged unworthy for coats because of medical or cosmetic reasons. Mikayla provided the foxes with extensive medical care and rehabilitation which would enable them to be adopted by carefully vetted, educated caretakers. My project, an assignment for National Geographic as well, was to document the rescued foxes, but I became mesmerized watching Mikayla’s empathetic rapport that connected her with the animals in her care. I watched Mikayla work with many other species besides her beloved foxes and her rescued bobcat, Savannah (also bred for a coat, rescued at 2 weeks). Mikayla always made it clear that foxes do not behave like dogs, that the various species of rescues behaved as who they are meant to be. The Save A Fox Rescue project is part of my Guggenheim Fellowship ongoing series on “Caretakers and Those They Rescued and How They Get Rescued Back”. My gratitude to my National Geographic editor, Alexa Keefe.
