Places of Inspiration highlights photographic work created in places and spaces that have inspired the photographers in their creative and personal lives, which can often be one and the same. The exhibition also emphasizes photography’s ability to transport us, teach us about the world, and convey the visceral, emotional experience of the photographer, whether they are working on assignment, traveling to pursue a personal interest, or finding unexpected wonders close to home.
These four photographers—Andrea Hernandez Briceño, Michelle Groskopf, Shawn Theodore, and Kiliii Yüyan—work in different styles and draw inspiration from different places and experiences. Yet they share an awareness of their responsibilities as photographic artists, and think critically about how background and identity influence their approach to, and interpretation of, the places they photograph.
These photographers were honorees in the 2019 edition of The 30: New and Emerging Photographers to Watch, an annual program that celebrates the work of early career photographers.

Andrea Hernandez Briceño
Andrea Hernandez Briceño is a Venezuelan photojournalist and National Geographic Explorer based in Caracas. She has a degree in Journalism from the Universidad Católica Andrés Bello, and studied in the Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism Program at the International Center of Photography in New York. Hernandez Briceño is also an International Women’s Media Fund Adelante Fellow.

Michelle Groskopf
Michelle Groskopf is a Los Angeles-based editorial and commercial photographer, best known for her street photography. Her work has shown around the world, and her clients include The New York Times, New York Magazine, WIRED, GQ, Vanity Fair, Apple, GrubHub, Square and Facebook. She lives in Hollywood with her partner Sasha Tivetsky, and their three crazy chihuahuas.

Shawn Theodore
Shawn Theodore (b. 1970, Germany) is an award-winning photographer, whose work opens broad conversations regarding the role of the photographer in the shaping of agency and imagery, engages in new forms of storytelling, and impacts the trajectory of the collective Black consciousness.

Kiliii Yuyan
Kiliii Yuyan illuminates stories of the Arctic and human communities connected to the land and sea. Informed by ancestry that is both Nanai/Hèzhé (East Asian Indigenous) and Chinese American, he explores the human relationship to the natural world from different cultural perspectives and extreme environments, on land and underwater. Yuyan is an award-winning contributor to National Geographic, TIME, and other major publications. He is one of PDN’s 30 Photographers (2019), a National Geographic Explorer, and a member of Indigenous Photograph and Diversify Photo. His work has been exhibited worldwide and received some of photography’s top honors.

The 30
The 30: New and Emerging Photographers to Watch is an annual program that celebrates early career photographers, and creates educational opportunities for photographers of all levels. The 30 are selected through a nomination and jurying process that includes established photographers, photography editors, art directors, curators, and other photography industry leaders.
The program’s multimedia content, exhibitions, and events, pay special attention to how The 30 established their unique creative visions, and are building careers in the contemporary photography market, offering all photographers an opportunity to learn from these talented individuals.
