Playboy launched in 1953 to a country booming with postwar prosperity and optimism. The first issue hit newsstands on the heels of the Kinsey Reports. The sexual revolution of the ‘60s was almost a decade away. Leading artists and photographers were given a platform to express themselves with total freedom; sex was never taboo, and life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness were to be enjoyed by all.
The world has since changed in unimaginable ways. Much that was taboo then is mainstream now. Conversely, the forces we fought against—repression, silence and fear—have not gone away. How can Playboy keep pushing boundaries and make a difference in 2019?
Today, our mission is to create a culture in which every person is free to pursue pleasure. As such, we are asking questions: How do we redefine society’s tired standards of beauty? How do we bring the stories of those who have previously been marginalized to the forefront?
As we evolve, we’re committed to spotlighting new voices on our pages, in front of the camera, and behind it. Playboy Behind the Lens celebrates our legacy of championing groundbreaking visual art, and our commitment to keep lending our platforms to artists of underrepresented identities.
Playboy’s mission is to create a culture in which every body is free to pursue pleasure. As one of the most iconic brands in history, we know that representation is key to achieving that mission.
For six decades we have provided a platform to some of the most ground-breaking and thought-provoking artists of our time. This includes a remarkable roster of contributors featuring such visual storytellers as Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, Keith Haring, and LeRoy Neiman alongside global thought leaders like Betty Friedan, Martin Luther King Jr., Bernie Sanders and Tarana Burke.
Today, we continue to explore (and create) culture in PLAYBOY magazine, which publishes four times a year, and examines equality, freedom of speech, gender and sexuality, and pleasure.
