Through which object, accessory or item of clothing do you express your gender? What is your favorite pose and how does this define you? Do you prefer to make yourself bigger or do you take up as little room as possible? And what does that have to do with how you identify yourself? In 2024, the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, presented the exhibition Point of View, which took a new look at the museum’s own collection to  explore  how  ideas about  gender have been visualized across centuries. This series of photographs formed the finale of that exhibition.

About the Artists

We are ten secondary vocational students from all over the Netherlands who responded to a call for participation from the Rijksmuseum. Over the course of five meetings, we spoke, wrote, and took photographs of each other to show what gender means to us, working under the guidance of photographer Bete van Meeuwen (born 1994). We discovered how poses can tell stories, how powerful small movements are, and how details can make all the difference.

As one of us put it: “Discovering your own gender is a lot of fun. It is like learning what you like to eat, what your favorite season is, or what type of clothing you like.”
