This exhibit provides an early glimpse of Kiana Hayeri’s current project, Promises Written On The Ice, Left In The Sun, for which she received the 2020 Visionary Award, from the Tim Hetherington Trust.
The multimedia project maps media coverage of women in Afghanistan, using the techniques of conventional journalism, and the mechanisms of advanced search engines and adaptive codes, to identify and trace the histories of women who have received public attention, once they have been been profiled in the media.
In collaboration with SOMA (Supporting Open Media in Afghanistan), and ANJU (Afghanistan National Journalist Union), Kiana Hayeri will trace the stories of these women’s lives since their moment in the spotlight, and she will share their experiences on an interactive website, revealing the strength of the participants, and the dangers of dilettante hit & run journalism.
Kiana Hayeri (b.1988) grew up in Tehran and migrated to Toronto while she was still a teenager. Faced with the challenges of adapting to a new environment, she took up photography as a way of bridging the gap in language and culture. Her projects often explore complex topics such as migration, adolescence, identity, and sexuality in war-ridden countries. While she has covered the front line and the dramatic events of war on assignments, she stays behind when she can, to capture a different, and alternative narrative of war.
Kiana is a Senior TED fellow, and a regular contributor to The New York Times from Afghanistan. Her work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Harper’s Magazine,Foreign Policy, The Washington Post, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, Le Monde, The Globe, and the Daily Mail, among others.
She is currently based out of Kabul, Afghanistan, covering the region.
Tim Hetherington (1970 — 2011) was a photographer, human rights advocate, journalist, and filmmaker. “I want to record world events, big History told in the form of a small history, the personal perspective that gives my life meaning and significance. My work is all about building bridges between myself and the audience.”
The Tim Hetherington Trust mission is to promote the continuation of Tim’s vision, by promoting the continued use of his work, and by supporting new work by other artists. The Trust coordinates the many uses of Tim’s work, by individuals and institutions engaged in humanitarian endeavours, using purposeful story-telling and the arts in general.
In addition to overseeing current projects, the Tim Hetherington Trust developed a grant programme to encourage the initiation of new work; the inaugural Visionary Award was announced in April 2015.

EDUCATION DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
How do these photos differ from the images out of Afghanistan that are often seen in the media?
How do these photos differ from the images you see out of a prison?
The artist maps media coverage of women in Afghanistan, and traces their stories after their moment in the media spotlight. What might you learn from these images “after the spotlight,” and how might that contribute to the narrative?
