Drawing from real accounts, Luceo has created a series of images and cinemagraphs telling the stories of immigrant crossings into the United States in a manner that pays homage to the religious iconography of the Stations of the Cross. The images and cinemagraphs were produced in the desert in southwest United States using stand-in actors to play the role of real immigrants. The stories were selected from among those offered by Colorado-based immigrants’ rights and advocacy organizations, highlighting the superlative challenges of trekking through the desert to reach the United States.

The images subtly focus on human rights issues associated with the crossing. Current US policy intentionally pushes immigration into the vast, treacherous interior deserts in a manner that costs hundreds of lives annually.

All images and cinemagraphs were art directed in a manner consistent with religious paintings and iconography of a Mexican and southwest aesthetic.
