Each year, nearly half of all deaths and 25% of all births go unrecorded worldwide.

Every unrecorded death means that someone is invisible to the health system,  their cause of death a missing piece of data that could prevent future losses.

Every unrecorded birth means a life without a legal identity and all the rights, services and protections that come with it.

When governments know who is being born, who is dying, where and why, they can identify diseases patterns, respond quickly to outbreaks, target health policies and resources where they’re needed most, and govern more effectively.

As part of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Data for Health (D4H) Initiative, Vital Strategies and D4H partners worked with Juan Arredondo to document the global challenge of unrecorded deaths and what becomes possible when everyone counts, in life and in death.
