Dan Welch (curator) began his career as a location scout on the original Law & Order, like many others in the field. He became known for his work on period productions such as Boardwalk Empire and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
After two decades of scouting without benefits or a pension, Welch recognized the need to organize this freelance workforce and establish location work as a sustainable career. Elected by his peers, he helped Local 817 President Tomas J. O’Donnell to frame and secure the first Television and Theatrical Location Collective Bargaining Agreement. Soon after, he became a business agent for Local 817, representing commercial, television, and theatrical Locations, as well as New York’s casting community.
Seen Before the Scene: A Location Scout’s View showcases scouts’ stunning images of New York City, taking you on a visual tour through every neighborhood.
