Harvey Stein

Harvey Stein is a professional photographer, teacher, lecturer, author and curator based in New York City. He is a long-time faculty member of the International Center of Photography and has also taught at the Rochester Institute of Technology and Drew University, among several other universities. He frequently leads workshops and lectures worldwide. He is the Director of Photography at Umbrella Arts Gallery in New York City and has curated 61 exhibits since 2007. Stein has had 83 solo exhibitions and has participated in over 170 group shows. He has published eight books of photography: “Parallels: A Look at Twins” (1978), “Artists Observed” (1986), “Coney Island” (1997), “Movimento: Glimpses of Italian Street Life” (2006), “Coney Island 40 Years” (2011), “Harlem Street Portraits” (2013), and “Briefly Seen New York Street Life” (2015). His new book, “Mexico Between Life and Death,” has just been published in September of 2018. He is working on his third Coney Island book, which will represent 50 years of photographing at the iconic American site. Stein’s photographs are in nearly 60 public collections. His work can be seen at Sous Les Etoiles Gallery in New York City.
