Kaya Lee Berne

Kaya Lee Berne is a photo editor at National Geographic magazine where she specializes in natural history and wildlife photography.

Prior to this role, she was a visual researcher and data reporter for the maps and graphics department at National Geographic where she collaborated with data providers, expert story sources, and the creative team to produce engaging cartographic and graphic content for the print magazine and digital platform. Her work has received both a gold Malofiej award and a silver SND award.

Kaya spent four years working with both National Geographic photographer Michael “Nick” Nichols and Magnum photographer David Alan Harvey, managing their archives and production of books, exhibits, presentations and international workshops. This led her to freelance as a photo editor for both Burn Magazine and the The New York Times magazine.

In 2016, she became a leading producer for the final year of LOOK3, Festival of the Photograph, which she misses deeply.

Kaya earned a degree in Neuroscience from the University of Virginia and currently resides on Cape Cod with her whippet, Mintaka.
