Lila Barth is a New York–based photographer and graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology, where she studied photography. Her work has appeared in publications including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, The Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post, and has been exhibited internationally—from Austria to the American Midwest and Brooklyn. In addition to being shortlisted for the Palm Prize, Barth was selected for Fotofilmic’s 2019 Alec Soth Workshop in Canada and received The New York Times Award at The Eddie Adams Workshop XXXIII.
I turn my lens toward Staten Island, a place that exists on the edge of New York City and yet feels worlds apart. The island’s contradictions fascinate me: its deep-rooted sense of community alongside political division, its suburban quiet against the backdrop of the city’s noise.
