Every day, around the world, individuals known as Waterkeepers are fighting horrific acts of pollution and environmental injustice. Toxic sewage, oil spills, out-of-control mercury levels, lead poisoning, plastic pollution and more, are threatening communities’ ability to safely swim, drink, fish, and play in their local rivers, lakes, and streams.

The Waterkeeper Warriors project showcases twenty Waterkeepers from Cambodia and Bangladesh to London and San Francisco, who have fought and won the most significant clean water battles of the past twenty years, and are facing the greatest challenges of the future.

To capture the spirit of these activists, twenty Culture Trip photographers, including Chloe Aftel, Finn Beales, Giulia Marchi, Nigel Parry and more, were dispatched to locations around the globe, with twenty notable voices, including Jon Hamm, Glenn Close, Michael Keaton, Lupita Nyong’o, and others telling their stories.

The Waterkeeper Warriors project is presented by Waterkeeper Alliance in partnership with Culture Trip to celebrate twenty years of clean water protection around the globe, and to educate the masses about the need to protect twenty million more square miles of waterways in the next twenty years.

    Waterkeeper Alliance

Waterkeeper Alliance unites more than 300 Waterkeeper groups that are on the frontlines of the global water crisis, patrolling and protecting more than 2.5 million square miles of rivers, lakes, and coastal waterways on six continents.

Waterkeeper groups defend our fundamental human right to drinkable, fishable, and swimmable waters from the Great Lakes to the Himalayas, and combine firsthand knowledge of their waterways with an unwavering commitment to the rights of their communities.

Whether they are on the water tracking down polluters, in courtrooms enforcing environmental laws, advocating in town meetings, or teaching in classrooms, the Waterkeeper movement speaks for the waters it defends with the backing of local communities.

Waterkeeper Alliance ensures that the world’s Waterkeeper groups are as connected to each other as they are to their local waters, organizing the fight for clean water into a coordinated global movement.
