Detroit’s most well-known visual narratives have been established largely by outsiders, amplifying notions of a city at the brink of collapse–or in a moment of renaissance. These widely disseminated narratives leave most native Detroiters out of the equation.
Visual stories authored by Detroiters reveal a different set of ideas: a population of 600,000 innovative residents working, living, and creating. Detroiters would rather document city residents who fall between the gaps of health insurance coverage, who launch careers in the arts on wages made at delis, who connect to their heritage through dances passed down through generations, and more.
Facing Change: Documenting America’s 2018 Documenting DETROIT fellows invite you to interact with stories of Detroiters. To take a postcard off our walls, take it with you, and get to know the Motor City as we know it. As postcards are removed from our container walls, what remains are larger than life portraits representing our greatest asset, the people of our city.

Facing Change: Documenting America (FCDA)
Facing Change: Documenting America (FCDA), a non-profit organization founded in 2009, illuminates critical issues facing our country, creating a documentary record used to engage and educate through public art exhibitions and events centered around documentary photography.
Photographers across the country join together to collectively document this era of great change in contemporary America, and focus on a wide range of subjects and stories, reaching people from all backgrounds and life experiences.
Documenting Detroit, launched in 2015, is the flagship project of FCDA, focusing on one major American city in the midst of new development alongside tradition and continuity. Our project is creating a lasting visual portrait of Detroit through a yearly, juried emerging photography fellowship.
We engage thousands of people through events and public art exhibitions, providing a platform for our audience to see themselves, and their neighborhoods, as documented through the lenses of local emerging documentary photographers.
