From Personal Projects to Paid Projects

In this panel, moderated by Alison Zavos, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Feature Shoot, we’ll talk to photographers Shaniqwa Jarvis, Dustin Cohen, Michael Rubenstein and Michael George, who each turned personal projects into paying gigs.

How can personal projects set you apart? How do you budget your time and money to get the work done? And, most importantly, can a project on the side really turn into something lucrative? In this panel, moderated by Alison Zavos, Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Feature Shoot, we’ll talk to photographers Shaniqwa Jarvis, Dustin Cohen, Michael Rubenstein and Michael George, who each turned personal projects into paying gigs. We’ll find out what inspires their projects, the challenges they face along the way, and how they get their work in front of the people that matter.

  • Michael George

    Michael George

    Michael George (b. 1988) is a photographer, writer, and people lover based out of Brooklyn. Through his work, he strives to tell stories of our common humanity through travel, culture, and the underrepresented. George’s stories have been published by National Geographic, The New York Times, WIRED, and dozens of other publications. He has been a guest lecturer at Yale University and has taught workshops in various locations, from the coast of California to onboard an Amtrak train. Most recently, he worked with Adobe and Passion Passport in Patagonia, Chile to help two students explore the effects of climate change in Torres del Paine National Park. If you meet him, he will inevitably take your portrait.

  • Shaniqwa Jarvis

    Shaniqwa Jarvis

    Born and bred on the Upper West Side, Shaniqwa Jarvis’ earliest memory is taking candid, personal pictures of her family and friends. Today, she is a freelance photographer who blends fashion photography with sensitive portraiture. Channeling this combination, Jarvis created the portrait series and installation, “This Charming Guest,” for The Standard Hotel Group. She was also commissioned by Adidas during the 2012 London Olympics to design her own pair of sneakers, inspired by her time as a competitive swimmer. Part of Adidas’ Artist Series for the Consortium SS12 collection, the sneakers sold out quickly and remain a coveted pair among sneaker collectors. Jarvis also contributes to publications including The Fader, i-D, The New York Times Magazine, and Vice. Her commercial clients include Liberty of London, LVMH, Nike, Supreme, Timberland, Tory Burch, and Woolite.

  • Michael Rubenstein

    Michael Rubenstein

    Michael Rubenstein is a photographer and filmmaker based in New York City. Previously based in Mumbai, India and Portland, Oregon; Rubenstein has worked for a variety of well-known magazine and corporate clients including NBC News, the Wall Street Journal, MasterCard, Yahoo!, Nike, Budweiser and many others. He enjoys telling stories and photographing real people doing real things. In 2015, Rubenstein was invited to become a Sony Artisan of Imagery.

  • Alison Zavos

    Alison Zavos

    Alison Zavos is the Founder/Editor-in-Chief of the photography site, Feature Shoot. She is also a photography curator and active member of the photographic community, reviewing portfolios for numerous organizations and speaking on various panels about topics such as the impact of new media, marketing and press. Prior to running Feature Shoot full-time, Zavos worked as a photo editor. She lives in Brooklyn with her family.
