Photoville

Lauren Camara’s intricate paper-based work bridges photography and fine art. Using layers of meticulously cut paper, she transforms everyday people—often from NYC—into bold, graphic portraits rich in depth and symbolism.

Her process starts with a photo she captures, but the true storytelling happens through paper. Each piece is carefully cut and layered, bringing out textures, colors, and patterns that reinterpret the original moment. By translating human expression and emotion into paper, Lauren’s work pushes beyond representation into something entirely new.

For Lauren, paper is more than a medium—it’s a way to give life to the people and stories that inspire her.

Artist Bios

  • Lauren Camara

Bronx-based self-taught artist Lauren Camara creates intricate, thought-provoking compositions exclusively from paper. With a background in graphic design, she transforms everyday moments and people into layered, graphic, and colorful portraits. Each meticulously cut piece of paper carries rich symbolism and personal significance.

Fascinated by paper’s textures, bold colors, and patterns, Lauren first discovered her passion for the medium while repurposing swatches from printing companies. She uses paper as a powerful storytelling tool, capturing the essence of the people she meets through her vibrant, deeply personal work.

Lauren is one of the eight artists selected for City Canvas, a program by the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs. Her work is part of The Fine Art Program and Collection at Montefiore Einstein in the Bronx, with select pieces soon to be displayed in JFK Airport. In March 2025, her artwork was featured on a signature cocktail in celebration of Women’s History Month in the Capital One Lounges at major U.S. airports. She has exhibited at Warburton Galerie and Art on the Ave NYC and is a member of The Paper Artist Collective and BX200.

Lauren’s work aims to highlight beauty in the simple moments and communities that inspire her.
