Photoville

Time Spent That Might Otherwise Be Forgotten is an ongoing series in which cross-stitch embroidery has been sewn directly into diaristic family and travel photographs drawn from across my life. The images are broken down and reformed through the embroidery into a hand-sewn pixel structure. As areas of the image are concealed by the embroidery, small, seemingly trivial details surface while the broader context dissolves.

The work refers to the tension between lived experience and photographic representation and considers photography’s tendency to displace memory rather than to preserve it. The work also considers the ways in which photographs convert personal history into nostalgic objects that obscure objective understandings of the past. By borrowing the visual language of digital imaging within an analog process, a connection is made between forgetting and file corruption which leads to degraded files and lost data. The tactility of the pieces are a response to the current cultural moment in which photographs increasingly exist as digital files held in devices rather than physical objects held in one’s hand.
