Santi Palacios was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1985 and works mainly outside of his country as a freelance photographer. He has contributed to The Associated Press, The New York Times, and El País, among other outlets, and has won multiple awards for his work. Also a trained sociologist, Palacios has focused much of his work on immigrants and where they come from, as well as their journeys and final destinations. Since early summer 2015, he has extensively covered the refugee route between the Greek islands and northern Europe, mainly for The Associated Press.
