The LGBT Community Center, X-Posure

X-Posure student photographers present their first photo project, “The Essence of Here,” in which participants explore their diverse and intersecting identities as an act of self-representation and advocacy. Through the use of imagery and spoken word, they will delve into the poetic visual stories that speak on their experiences as LGBTQ+ youth. In the spirit of “nothing about us, without us,” youth will speak on the importance of having the agency to tell their own stories.

New York City’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center empowers people to lead healthy, successful lives. The Center celebrates our diversity and advocates for justice and opportunity. For members of our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth community, we provide a safe, inclusive and affirming environment to foster relationships, personal and professional skills, and the evolution of identity. Open to young people between the ages of 13-21.

The Center’s X-Posure photography program is geared toward self-advocacy and representation, providing a platform for LGBTQ+ youth to explore and share their diverse and intersecting identities. The program runs in 10-week cycles and combines other narrative forms to address the diverse issues that resonate with our youth’s life stories. Youth learn the basics of photography and storytelling by exploring different formats such as portraiture, photojournalism, and personal photo essays.
