Between represents work by Venice Arts’ Advanced Studies: Photography students, our most engaged teen photographers who have been exploring intimate storytelling for more than a year, including on topics such as coming out, the intersection of work and family life, and the trauma of domestic violence.
These committed young photographers developed their project ideas in the advanced workshops, while shooting independently between class sessions. During class, students presented their work for critique, which emphasized aesthetic, conceptual, and technical skill development. They also viewed historic and contemporary works, wrote about their work, feelings, and ideas, and learned to edit and curate their photography, designing photo books for their final projects.
As Advanced Studies’ students, these young photographers are also provided 1:1 mentoring and support for creative, college, and career development, including preparing their portfolios and résumés and submitting their work to national and local competitions.
In addition to exhibiting at the Venice Arts Gallery, the work of these young photographers has been exhibited locally (Photo L.A., Round Hole Square Peg, G2 Gallery), and published in media outlets including The New York Times and California Sunday Magazine.

Venice Arts
Founded in 1993, Venice Arts mission is to ignite, expand, and transform the lives of Los Angeles’ low-income youth through photography and film education, and to use our participatory storytelling practices to amplify the voices of underrepresented communities around the world.
Our programs teach young people how to use the camera to find their voice, establish self-representation and to share their world through visual storytelling.
In addition to our programs for Los Angeles area youth, Venice Arts host documentary-themed exhibitions, film screenings, and public programs at its gallery, and consults with nonprofit organizations, academic institutions, and foundations–locally and globally–on participatory photography and filmmaking projects, as well as on its award-winning media arts education pedagogy.
