Now+Then is a teen art project that explores archival family photos through research, interviews, and artmaking. Students explored various contemporary photographers’ work that engages directly with archives including: Kyle Lui’s Sowing Rice with Salt, Keisha Scarville’s Passports, Dawoud Bey’s Birmingham Project, Anthoula Lelekidis’ Collage, and Joshua Rashaad McFadden’s I Am a Man. They brainstormed all they knew about a chosen photograph or family member, then conducted interviews to fact check and gain a deeper understanding—all while asking, “How does learning about my family’s history impact the way I see myself?” Primary source interviews and research were the foundation for thoughtful and deeply personal artmaking. Through an extraordinary range of photographic approaches, these students created a collective portrait of immigrant family life as varied and vital as New York City itself. Each image is an act of preservation, honoring a history as singular as the journey that brought it here.
